Department of Allied Health Sciences Cytotechnology Program Program Review Responses Mission Statement The department of Allied Health Sciences commits itself to offering an excellent comprehensive program in Cytotechnology that meets the needs of the communities it serves. Through quality teaching, research, and service the program strives to achieve excellence as evidenced by program accreditation and its commitment to provide state-of-the-art health care education to south central Louisiana and beyond. Enrollment and Graduates Enrollment in the Cytotechnology program has continued to show a positive upward trend. The program is highly specialized and admits only four students per year. This number is mandated by the professions accrediting agency based on available slide study sets, clinical screening case loads, and clinical cytopathology specialties per student per year. Forty-eight percent (48%) of the forty-six (46) nationally accredited programs are similar to the Nicholls (NSU) program. Of the forty-six accredited programs, three programs have a capacity of five students per year, nine programs have a capacity of six students per year, and ten programs are identical to NSU in that they have a capacity of only four students per year. The NSU program has produced 21 Cytotechnology graduates since its inception via the B.S. degree pathway (1997/1998 3 students, 1998/1999-2 students, 1999/2000-4 students, 2000/2001-2 students, 2001/2002-4 students, 2002/2003-2 students, and 2003/2004-4 students). Is the curriculum Up-to-Date The Cytotechnology program is a joint academic partnership between NSU and Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC). The curriculum is up-to-date and reflective of the Cytotechnology scope-of-practice. The program is nationally accredited and its continued accreditation was reaffirmed during the 2003 summer session for an additional five years by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon Recommendation of the Cytotechnology Programs Review Committee of the American Society of Cytopathology. It is the only accredited Cytotechnology program in Louisiana and is one of only forty-six (46) nationally. Faculty Quality The quality and diversity of faculty is a definitive strength of the program. All faculty members meet or exceed qualifications as mandated by national acerediting organizations based on academic preparation and professional licensure and certification requirements. Faculty members continue to demonstrate currency in their respective clinical practice areas by relicensure and professional development activities. The program director is presently enrolled in a Doctoral program and should complete requirements for the PhD during the 2005/2006 academic year. The clinical instructor is Masters prepared and the medical director is a licensed physician boarded in internal medicine and anatomical pathology. The medical director also hold a Juris Doctorate degree. Equipment and Facilities The Cytotechnology lab is in need of replacement of all student and faculty multi-headed microscopic resources. This assessment was evidenced in the most recent site-visit summary by the Cytotechnology Programs Review Committee. The department will explore grant opportunities and alternate funding sources for purchase of these resources. Student Outcomes Student outcomes are outstanding as evidenced by survey of area health care industry providers in clinical laboratory services. A significant number of Cytotechnology graduates hold positions of leadership as mangers of departments including Chabert Medical Center in Houma and V.A. Medical Center in New Orleans. The entire Cytotechnology Department at Chabert is composed of graduates of the Nicholls program and performs the majority of cytology screenings for the entire Louisiana charity hospital system. Program graduates are highly recruited for laboratory positions in Louisiana and beyond. $39JKL`vwx}* + ƷvgWOC7Whzhz5CJaJhzhS 5CJaJhzhS >*hzhS >*CJOJQJaJhS hS CJOJQJaJhzhS 5CJOJQJaJhS hzCJOJQJaJhzhz>*CJOJQJaJhS hS CJaJ hS hzhS hzCJOJQJaJhzhz>*CJOJQJaJhS hzCJaJhzhz5CJ0\aJ0hz5CJ8aJ8hzCJ0aJ0$3Lx+ / [$\$ed,]gdz$\$a$ed,]gdzed,]\$^ed,]gdz\$ed,] \$ed,]gdz$[$\$a$ed,]gd]E[$\$ed,]gd]EB . / L T \ ʼ|la|a|aYKhS hS 5CJ\aJjhzUhzhS CJaJhzhS CJOJQJ]aJhzhS CJOJQJaJhzCJOJQJaJ hS hS hzhzCJaJhS hS CJaJhzCJaJjhzUmHnHuhzhS >*hzhS >*CJOJQJaJhzhz>*CJOJQJaJhz>*CJOJQJaJ K j PQabcdeoAB澶澶؍ hS hL_ hsg5\hsghsg5\hsghS 5\ hsghsg hsghS hsghS 5hsghS hS CJOJQJaJ hz5\hS hS 5\hz hS hS hzhS 5hz5CJ\aJ" QceABgdS [$\$ed,]gdsg[$\$ed,]gdz 21h:psg/ =!"#$% nr895sB۬XPNG IHDRBsRGB pHYs.#.#x?v]IDATx^ۺ8 FgsiOA$V.##X`BvU~@roN 2F@@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@bX: c $&%NC2F @@b?I>'_D @ d,\J\:41sq@ބۿ [tr[e˕C` LcS"Mޘ,@bJ;f %#|19yVdH <dl@MCNH&wmΤnpA#+dy c%|<&PY}Si/(6S(4+M_t~{/ ,)LѰE_8LX㑬8ؑ8e˓Y:wyNL{ֹ) 6W\k}TJOcA@!c(٨w׶Xj1~~t'1SޚĖy6(vg(DA&uئT=MkאEdMc.F,)OnH϶Ct~w< c:nWE(]]*$0/+I,mHZT&WRi5ԩ'0B7 A|JJ.Ӄ79* ʙjE E_ 6G@F7惱Q۳&̶愃!]ٴkPXNƄ:3DLE8˄6FXNfb5P#`-v2d J-&0?XF8=P)tˠ(ܒaNjs!E"n;@.ј>|T658J`_xq5cAl7r\/Ɠ` vZ*?*+t_C2f ;@:@g oY-_Sɪ?띔yʗH&%0%j|\uP3rU:k)b< e,KLX%&Էz 睆HU0Z eIxM\W>]Dae7Ғ'Zq-@&V{ڭ[!zbB3@_8h;[Agy%8K˘m[?'OԲa[cg7..孠v~)@f[X@K˘$8i!Nn+R7=+@dQ1iaFpwwo21I 01e624˥P.oe1 "c],Z-U5'<*2&aJZ]#s\>hٔDf_RrX {ߞ]5V@]BWV9\L{qfb a 5jrYZ\F}K_;`Vr2[ݗHM{Hߥ|lVќfJrfkTt#@J"Z7&$]uHad;PBj@#d p.)\.-Օ]]٦CШ}#J١aoe$HHd Qq)Z[ cm'zt>KN "tp,B:@uJPk^.U%kBe˾l@J$Âdžk҅[ Jai cϩliC ගF[P2 I.BɘKU EmTJphVL*n]Iop}l~UX XBs? 0 27ţ#@FUuӘWU$joVb/SF*a caSޱˋ!a7П|,6Q@B낙M!
