COURSES OF INSTRUCTION FOR ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES

Courses numbered below 100 are developmental, courses in the 100 series are designed for freshmen, 200 courses are for sophomores, and 300 and 400 courses are for juniors and seniors.

Admission to courses numbered 300 or above requires sophomore standing and completion of six semester hours of non‑developmental English and three semester hours of non‑developmental mathematics.


•  

Numbers preceded by an asterisk (*)indicate courses carrying undergraduate credit or graduate credit. Such courses are structured to ensure appropriate attention to both groups.


•  

Courses numbered 500 to 599 are designed for graduate students. Seniors, however, may be admitted under certain conditions (see Admissions of Seniors to Part‑Time Graduate Study).


•  

A freshman or sophomore cannot register for a course listed and offered for graduate or undergraduate credit, if a graduate student is enrolled in the course.


Courses numbered below 100 are developmental and are not acceptable for credit toward graduation. Some other courses numbered above 100 may not carry credit toward graduation; see course description.

AHSC 220.Pathophysiology. 3-3-0. Prerequisites: BIOL 116-117 or permission of department head. Systems approach which identifies, characterizes, and analyzes physiological alterations in the functions of the human body. Emphasis on the alterations of normal physiology and the various ways alterations are manifested. (Formerly BIOL 220.) (51.0901)

AHSC 221.Pharmacology. 3-3-0. Prerequisites: BIOL 116-117 or permission of department head. Underlying principles of actions of various drug groups; sources, physical and chemical properties, physiological actions, absorption rate, excretion, therapeutic uses, side effects, and toxicity. Emphasis on fundamental concepts applying to actions of most drugs.(Formerly BIOL 221.) (51.0901)

AHSC 301. Cardiovascular Technology Fundamentals I. 3-3-0. Theory and application of basic non-invasive cardiovascular diagnostic procedures with an emphasis on electrocardiography and ambulatory monitoring. Open to students with junior standing or permission of the instructor. Fa only. (51.0901)

AHSC 302. Cardiovascular Technology Fundamentals II. 3‑3‑0. Prerequisite: AHSC 301. Theory and application of intermediate and advanced cardiovascular diagnostic procedures with an emphasis on cardiac stress testing, pacemaker therapy, cardiovascular disease and pharmacology. Sp only. (51.0901)

AHSC 303. Cardiovascular Technology Internship. 6‑0‑18. Prerequisite: AHSC 302 or permission of instructor. Supervised internship/practicum in non‑invasive cardiovascular diagnostics in an approved clinical facility.  Sp and Su only. (51.0901)

AHSC 306. Assessing Wellness During Health and Disease. 3-3-0. Prerequisites: EMSP 101, 102, and 103 or permission of instructor/department head. Theory and application of health risk appraisal, clinical exercise testing, and exercise recommendation for apparently healthy individuals and special populations. Fa only. (51.0999)

AHSC 308. Optimizing Wellness During Health and Disease. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: AHSC 306. Theory and application of exercise management for apparently healthy individuals and special populations. Sp only. (51.0999)

AHSC 400. Invasive Cardiovascular Monitoring. 3‑3‑0. Cardiovascular hemodynamics from an anatomical, physiological, and clinical perspective. Emphasis on right and left heart function and pulmonary, coronary and systemic circulation. Open to students with junior standing or permission of instructor.  (51.0901)

AHSC 401. Introductory Echocardiography. 4‑3‑2. Introductory presentation of theory and diagnostic application of cardiac ultrasound with emphasis on M‑Mode and Two‑Dimensional imaging. Open to students with junior standing or permission of instructor. Fa only. (51.0901)

AHSC 402. Intermediate and Advanced Techniques in Echocardiography and Doppler Ultrasound. 4‑3‑2. Prerequisite: AHSC 401. Presentation of theory and diagnostic application of interventional echocardiographic and doppler ultrasound techniques. Sp only. (51.0901)

AHSC 403. Echocardiography and Doppler Ultrasound Internship. 6‑0‑18. Prerequisite: AHSC 402 or permission of instructor. Supervised internship/practicum in an approved clinical facility. Sp and Su only. (51.0901)

AHSC 440. Integrated Health Professions Practice I. 4‑4‑0. Prerequisites: Completion of an accredited allied health program, credentialed/licensed in an allied health specialty and completion of all required support courses. A multidisciplinary approach to the role(s) of allied health professionals in the delivery of health care services. Emphasis on coordinated services and resources that are specific to community health, contemporary clinical care, accountability and cost effectiveness. (51.0701)

AHSC 442. Integrated Health Professions Practice II. 4‑4‑0. Prerequisite: AHSC 440. A comprehensive approach to clinical service and education in the allied health professions. Emphasis on continuous validation of clinical practice and the development of education programs that will promote life long learning and continued competency. (51.0701)

AHSC 450. Seminar in Contemporary Health Care Issues. 3‑3‑0. Multidisciplinary approach to selected topics, readings, discussions, projects, and papers on various aspects of health care related to the allied health professional. Subject content and presenters will vary depending upon current issues. Open to students with junior standing in the health care professions or permission of instructor. (51.9999)
