Narrative
Library
The staff of Ellender Memorial Library works diligently to provide our students with opportunities
to develop life-long learning skills [1]. Instruction is provided in a variety of ways. One-on-one
instruction is available 73 hours per week from the reference librarian at the central reference desk.
Telephone and email requests are also answered during this time frame
[2]. Reference librarians are
available for individualized consultations during posted office hours and by appointment. Explanations
on how to use library resources are found on the Library's Web site, under Information Literacy
[3] and Distance Education
[4].
The Library staff provides a one-hour tour of the facility and a one-hour hands-on, introductory session
on library use, as part of the Freshman Studies classes. These general information classes are supplemented
throughout a student's career with Drop-In Classes [5].
Drop-In Classes are offered several times each semester
for students to attend, without registering, for more in-depth instruction on specialized topics such as eBooks
and online journals. Discipline-related topics like Resources in Literature and Resources in Business are also
offered. Bibliographic instruction is available for individual classes and is tailored to specific class needs.
For example, education majors in their initial professional education courses (EDUC 250 and EDUC 251) can learn
how to access and use the Learning Resource Center, located in Polk Hall. Table 1 below indicates the number of
classes and tours provided by the Library in 2003.

Assessment is completed on all formalized bibliographic instruction classes. At the close of each class period,
students fill out evaluation forms
[6]. The Bibliographic Instruction Committee tabulates the responses and
evaluates the data. Adjustments are made each semester based on the analysis. For example, the majority of drop-in
classes are now scheduled in the afternoons, based on students' feedback.
The Library staff participates in many student-sponsored functions and is visible at many campus activities.
Librarians operate informational tables at events such as Welcome Back Day and Family Day. The Library Director
discusses Library services at a new faculty orientation session held at the beginning of each semester.
In an effort to promote services and instruction and to increase awareness of Library resources, the Library
staff began publishing a newsletter, Ce qui se passe..., in the fall of 2004
[7].
Other Learning/Information Resources
The University provides access to regular and timely instruction in the use of many other learning/information
resources in addition to the Library. Click here for a table providing direct links to the Bulletin's descriptions
of these services, many including locations and hours of service
[8].
