Comprehensive Standard 3.6.3

The majority of credits toward a graduate or a post-baccalaureate professional degree are earned through the institution which awards the degree. In the case of graduate and post-baccalaureate professional degree programs offered through joint, cooperative, or consortia arrangements, the student earns a majority of credits from the participating institutions.

Narrative

As stated in the University's Bulletin, all graduate or post-baccalaureate programs at Nicholls require students to earn at least two-thirds of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction offered by that institution, as specified in residence requirements [1]:

Nicholls State University, 2005-2006 Bulletin

Graduate Studies, Residence Requirements

To satisfy residence requirements, a student must earn at least two thirds of the semester hours of degree program credit in residence at Nicholls State University.

This requirement is further specified in the Bulletin's section on transfer credits for graduate studies [2]. A student may transfer from a regionally accredited institution "a maximum of one-third of the semester hours of graduate degree program credit." No grade lower than B in a graduate course will be accepted, and the course must be applicable to the degree. Policies concerning transfer credits differ among programs. For specific questions, the student is to contact his or her program's coordinator. Nicholls will not accept transfer credits earned at another institution by an applicant under academic or non-academic suspension. The University will accept transfer credits only if the student is eligible to re-enter the former institution.

To ensure compliance with University residence requirements, Nicholls uses an electronic student degree audit [3] which verifies that graduates have earned at least 25 percent of the required hours in residence for their intended degree. Candidates for graduation are notified of deficiencies that need correction prior to graduation approval.
