Narrative
Nicholls State University, located in Thibodaux, Louisiana, is a comprehensive, regional University
serving south central Louisiana. Tax supported and coeducational, it opened its doors on September 23,
1948, as Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana State University.
In 1956, the Louisiana Legislature separated Nicholls from Louisiana State University and authorized
it to develop full four-year curricula. Thus, in September 1956, the former junior college began
operation as Francis T. Nicholls State College. It granted its first degrees in May 1958. Act 93 of
the State Legislature in 1970 changed the name to Nicholls State University.
The Office of Assessment and Institutional Research provides data related to student enrollment through
an Enrollment Statistics Report
[1] each semester and through a Common Data Set

and Factbook [3]
annually. The Factbook reports enrollment by programs of study. The Common Data Set reports various
demographics of students. At the end of each semester, The Office of Assessment and Institutional
Research also submits a file containing information on every student to the state, and various reports
are available through the Louisiana Board of Regents' Web site. This information is maintained by the
Louisiana Board of Regents in a Statewide Student Profile System
[4].
The Fall 2004 Statewide Student Profile System Institutional Summary Report
indicates that Nicholls State University enrolled a total of 7,482 students
[5].
